As rainwater falls on the surface, it is either absorbed by the soil or flows on the surface as runoff. Some of the water that is absorbed by the soil slowly moves through the ground until it reaches a depth where it is stored as groundwater. This groundwater has become a vital resource for drinking water, agriculture, and industry.
